이번 주는 이스라엘이 가데스바네아에서 12정탐꾼을 가나안에 보냈다가 그 중 10명의 부정적인 보고를 듣고는 이스라엘 백성이 애굽으로 다시 돌아가겠다고 반역한 사건에 이어지는 내용을 듣게 됩니다.

"이집트 사람이 들으면 어떻게 합니까? 주님께서는 이미 주님의 능력으로 이 백성을 이집트 사람 가운데서 이끌어 내셨습니다. 　14) 이집트 사람이 이 땅에 사는 사람들에게 말하면, 어떻게 합니까? 이 땅에 사는 사람들은, 주 하나님이 이 백성 가운데 계시다는 것과, 주 하나님이 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 보이셨다는 것과, 주님의 구름이 그들 위에 머물고, 주님께서 낮에는 구름기둥 가운데 계시고, 밤에는 불기둥 가운데 계셔서, 그들 맨 앞에서 걸어가신다는 것을 이미 들었습니다. 　15) 그런데 이제 주님께서 이 백성을 한 사람을 처리하듯 단번에 죽이시면, 주님께서 하신 일을 들은 나라들은 　16) '그들의 주가 자기 백성에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 갈 능력이 없어서, 그들을 광야에서 죽였다’ 하고 말할 것입니다. 　17) 그러니 이제 주님께서는, 이미 말씀하신 대로, 주님의 권능을 나타내 보이시기 바랍니다. 　18) '나 주는 노하기를 더디하고, 사랑이 넘치어서 죄와 허물을 용서한다. 그러나 나는 죄를 벌하지 않은 채 그냥 넘기지는 아니한다. 나는, 아버지가 죄를 지으면 본인뿐만 아니라 자손 삼사 대까지 벌을 내린다’ 하고 말씀하셨으니, 　19) 이집트를 떠날 때부터 이제까지 주님께서 이 백성을 용서하신 것처럼, 이제 주님의 그 크신 사랑으로 이 백성의 죄를 용서하여 주시기 바랍니다." 　20) 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "너의 말대로 용서하겠다. 　21) 그러나 내가 살아 있는 한, 그리고 나 주의 영광이 온 땅을 가득 채우고 있는 한, 　22) 나의 영광을 보고도, 내가 이집트와 광야에서 보여 준 이적을 보고도, 열 번이나 거듭 나를 시험하고 내 말에 순종하지 않은 사람들은, 어느 누구도, 　23) 내가 그들의 조상들에게 주기로 맹세한 그 땅을 못 볼 것이다. 나를 멸시한 사람은, 어느 누구도 그 땅을 못 볼 것이다.

"하느님께서 몸소 힘을 내시어 이 백성을 이집트에서 이끌어내셨다는 말을 모든 이집트인이 다 들었습니다. 　14) 야훼께서 이 백성 가운데 계시다는 소식이 여기에 사는 사람들에게도 널리 퍼졌습니다. 야훼께서는 눈에 보이게 나타나시어 이 백성을 구름으로 덮어주시고 낮에는 구름기둥으로 밤에는 불기둥으로 앞길을 인도해 주시었습니다. 　15) 그런데 이 백성을 모조리 없애버리시면, 하느님의 이야기를 들어 아는 민족들이 어떻게 말하겠습니까? 　16) '야훼는 맹세만 하였을 뿐, 백성을 그리로 데려갈 힘이 없어서 광야에서 멸종시켰다.' 하지 않겠습니까? 　17) 아닙니다. 주여, 이제 주님의 크신 힘을 약속하셨던 대로 나타내 주십시오. 　18) '야훼께서는 좀처럼 화를 내지 않으시고 끝없이 사랑하시며 미쁘시어, 짐짓 거역하고 반항한 죄도 용서하신다. 어떤 죄든지 그냥 넘기시지는 않지만 선조의 죄를 그 후손 삼, 사대에게만 물으신다.' 하시지 않으셨습니까? 　19) 하느님의 사랑은 그지없으시어 이 백성을 이집트에서 여기까지 이끌어오시는 동안 참아주셨습니다. 이번에도 이 백성의 죄를 용서해 주십시오." 　20) 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "내가 네 말대로 용서해 준다. 　21) 그러나 내가 살아 있는 한, 이 야훼의 영광이 온 땅을 채우고 있는 한, 이루어질 수 없는 일이 있다. 　22) 나의 영광을 보고도, 내가 이집트와 광야에서 나타낸 힘을 보고도 이렇게 거듭거듭 나를 시험하고 나의 말을 듣지 않는 자들은 그 누구도 　23) 내가 저희 선조에게 주겠다고 맹세한 땅을 보지 못하리라. 이토록 나를 업신여기는 자는 결코 그 땅을 보지 못하리라.

민 14:11-23 　11) The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? 　12) I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.” 　13) Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 　14) And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, Lord, are with these people and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 　15) If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 　16) ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 　17) “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 　18) ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’ 　19) In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.” 　20) The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 　21) Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, 　22) not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times - 　23) not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors.
